The aim of this project was to design a book/ printed artifact for a chosen collection. I deisgned a book based on a collection of Marvel comic books from the 1970s. I explored the role of women within these comics, creating catogries for patterns I had noticed and using text to explain them. The final book was printed in black and white on sugar paper.

The idea behind this project was to highlight the treatment of women in comics. Often female characters were portrayed as weak, over emotional and as sex objects, leaving the male characters to take care of the dangerous and heroic tasks. This is a pattern which can be stil observed in media today, particularly film for which the Bechdel test has been created. This project was backed by theories of feminisim, the male gaze and gender stereotypes as a way to show the unequality which existed within these comics. The aim was to display the evidence and to let the reader develop an opinion.
A case I had created for the two books.
The front and back covers, altered from existing comics.
